The Quote That Did What It Said

“Good artists copy, great artists steal.”
A line about borrowing has spent more than a century being borrowed, altered and reassigned — from poets to artists, from Eliot to Picasso, Jobs and Bowie. Its history may be the best demonstration of its own argument.
The sentence most of us know appears to have no single author and no single original form.
Follow it backwards and the words begin to move.
T. S. Eliot’s Tradition and the Individual Talent alongside David Bowie, photographed by Gavin
Evans / The Session (DB03, “Shh…”), London, 1995.
No one appears to have written the sentence we now remember. It was edited into existence.
