Washi paper, bamboo and light come together as something lighter than furniture, softer than sculpture. Noguchi’s Akari lamps have been made in Japan since 1951 using traditional Gifu lantern methods.
A bedside cabinet becomes a stack of sliding plastic cylinders in Anna Castelli Ferrieri’s Componibili for Kartell. Designed in 1969, its rounded modular form has changed remarkably little since.
Not designed by Charles and Ray Eames, but chosen by them. The Eames House Bird began as a folk art figure in their Pacific Palisades home, then entered Vitra’s collection in 2007, carved in solid alder wood.

The Creature
Designed by René Lalique in 1933, the Mossi Vase gives clear crystal a sense of weight and repetition through raised circular forms. Transparency becomes less fragile, shaped instead by volume, pattern and reflected light.
The split toe became a design code through Maison Margiela’s Tabi, first introduced in 1989. In the 2025 Broken Mirror edition, pieces of mirror cover the boot, shifting it between recognizable form and reflected image.
Philippe Starck’s Juicy Salif for Alessi gives an ordinary kitchen task an unlikely silhouette. Sketched on a pizzeria napkin in Italy in 1988, it entered production in 1990 as polished aluminium on three spider-like legs.
